Dr. Stephen Pournaras is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who has been practicing in Fairfax, Virginia since 1986.
As a general orthopaedic surgeon, he specializes in the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. His subspecialties include numerous upper extremity problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis of the thumb, lacerations of tendons and nerves on the hand, fractures and dislocations of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder, tennis elbow, rotator cuff tendonitis and tears.

Dr. Pournaras attended both undergraduate and medical school at the University of Virginia. He received his medical school diploma from the University of Virginia in 1980 and completed his internship and residency in Orthopedic surgery at George Washington University Hospital in 1985. He completed a year in Los Angeles, California as a Joseph Boyes Hand fellow specializing in surgery of the hand in 1986.
Dr. Pournaras is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He primarily practices at Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia where he has served as past chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic surgery.
